摘要: The coexistence of urban expansion and contraction, a phenomenon particularly prominent in China but evident globally, is characterized by distinct patterns and spatial distributions. However, existing studies often overlook the transitions between these development patterns and lack a multi-scale perspective for a more comprehensive analysis. This study bridges this gap by examining urban development across national, regional, urban agglomeration, and urban scales. Cities are categorized into sprawling, shrinking, dense, and stable types to analyze the development characteristics of Chinese cities at different scales. Our findings reveal that, while China's urbanization exhibits an overall expansion trend, its spatial distribution and temporal evolution show significant regional and spatial characteristics. At the national scale, urban expansion has slowed, while the prevalence of contraction has grown. Between 2000 and 2020, the number of shrinking cities in China increased by 46.9 %. At the regional scale, China exhibits a gradient urbanization pattern: rapid urbanization in the west, polarized urbanization in the central, stable urbanization in the east, and transformational urbanization in the northeast. At the urban agglomeration scale, eastern clusters present integration and densification, while central-western clusters experience core expansion with peripheral contraction. At the urban scale, cities with similar industrial configurations exhibit similar internal development patterns, especially in resource-dependent cities. The study also quantifies multi-scale human-land coordination, revealing that inter-agglomeration disparities emerge as the dominant component of regional inequality. These findings underscore the importance of differentiated, scale-sensitive urban development policies and offer insights to promote balanced, sustainable urban growth.
